The Japanese business Shimano manufacturers many bike components. One of these components is the E-Type Front Derailleur. A front derailleur is the mechanism that moves your bike chain over the front gears (the chainrings) when you shift with the left-hand shifter. Front derailleurs attach to the seat tube (the thing of the frame that runs from your pedals to your bike seat). Most front derailleurs are held on with a clamp, however the E-type is attached to a bolt on the seat tube.
Instructions
1. Mount the bike into the bike stand. The drivetrain side (the side with your gears) must be facing out so you can install the derailleur.
2. Line up the bolt for the derailleur with the braze-on hole on your seat tube. This braze-on hole will be just above your bottom bracket (the component your pedals and front gears attach to). Use an Allen wrench to screw in the bolt to install the derailleur.
3. Adjust the height and lateral position of the derailleur. The pivot bolts along the derailleur can be loosened to allow you to manipulate the cage of the derailleur (the metal pieces that hang down near the chain). The bottom of the cage must be less than 1 mm from the top of the largest chainring when looking at the derailleur from the side. When looking from the top, the outer part of the cage must be in line with the largest chainring.
4. Remove one link of the chain with the chain tool by lining the chain tool up with a pin and screwing the chain tool until the pin pops out (save the pin if you don't have extras). Pull the cable through the cable anchor bolt (located the top of the derailleur near the attachment bolt). Shift using your left shift lever to be certain the cable is routed correctly and is the correct length (adjust if necessary).7.
Wipe a small amount of the cable grease onto the cable. Insert the cable through the hole on your shift lever (the placement of the hole will vary depending on your shifters). Route the cable through any cable housing that came with the cable (cut the housing if there is excess) to the front derailleur.
6. Run the chain inside the derailleur cage and over your smallest chainring. Bolt the chain back together by reinserting the pin.5.
Cut of the excess cable using the cable cutters leaving one inch of extra cable for making later adjustments. Crimp an end cap onto the end of the cable with the crimping tool. This prevents the cable from fraying.
