So How Exactly Does An Oxygen Sensor Operate In A Vehicle

The Oxygen sensor is reads exhaust Gauze temperature.


A "thin" (fuel poor) air/fuel mixture burns hotter than a rich (fuel excess) mixtures. The O2 sensor monitors the heat of the exhaust to send the computer real-time information on the engine's fuel ratio. The O2 sensor closes the computer's information loop, allowing it to double check its calculations and adjust for unknown variables like air density and oxygen content.

There are several different types of O2 sensors, but most (Lambda probes) contain a small piece of zirconium dioxide (or zirconia) crystal. The computer reads the voltage emitted by the zirconia crystal and uses that to extrapolate for exhaust temperature, which is further extrapolated to indicate its oxygen content.
