Connect Two Vehicle Batteries In Parallel

A moment van battery doubles vigour storage, reducing the chance of a dead battery.

Adding a moment battery to your vehicle can dispense it with a higher in fashion and a larger reserve of battery power. Connecting the second battery in a parallel configuration with the first will not affect the total voltage, typically 12 volts, but will double the amount of current supplied. There are few concerns about the added current supply since electrical components will only draw the amount of current needed to operate at a given voltage. However, the total reserve of battery power, typically measured in amp-hours, will double, which reduces the chance of a dead battery.

Instructions

1. Cleaning will ensure good electrical contact when the battery is reinstalled.5. Install a battery terminal onto the positive and negative posts of the new battery, and tighten them securely.

2. Remove the negative cable from the existing battery. Always remove the negative connection first to lessen the chance of a short circuit caused by a battery cable touching a grounded metal component in the automobile. The negative cable and post on most vehicles are colored black.

3. Remove the positive cable from the existing battery. This is commonly colored red.

4. Use a battery terminal cleaner, available at any auto parts store, to remove any buildup or oxidation on the existing battery terminals, posts or cables. Mount the second car battery in the vehicle. For the best performance, minimize cable distances by mounting the second battery as close as possible to the first, preferably right next to it. Orient the second battery so that the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals line up with the existing battery.

A battery terminal is usually a lead ring that tightens around the battery post and includes a screw connector for wire attachment. Hardware is available for batteries with top- and side-mounted posts.

6. Connect a stackable battery cable between the positive posts of the new and existing batteries. A stackable cable is designed to allow multiple connections to a single post and consists of a flat blade connector mounted to each end of a length of wire. Replace the existing positive battery cable onto the positive post of the existing battery. Tighten all connections securely.

7. Repeat Step 6 for the negative terminals and battery cable.
