4. Bring your torch tip close to the steel where you intend to begin cutting. The inner, dark blue cone of flame should be touching the starting point. Do not touch the torch tip to your steel, as it will put the torch out. When your starting point is glowing orange, slowly depress the oxygen blast lever until the torch begins cutting. Move your torch slowly along the soapstone line until you finish the cut.


5. Close the oxygen adjustment valve first. Next, close the acetylene adjustment valve and then close the tank valves. Back the regulator screws out till they lose tension. Drain hoses by opening the adjustment valves on handle, and then close your valves. Make sure all hot metal and slag is accounted for, and that none has landed on flammable surfaces. Stay in the work area for one additional half hour to examine for any smoldering.
