Switch The Timing Belt On The Passat

Interchange the Timing Band on a Passat

Whether the year Passat you are working on has a tensioner pulley, remove the tensioner pulley (the sliders entail not be removed). Remove the upper timing girth insert and the valve comprehend using the appurtenant sockets.2. It takes approximately three hours to modify the timing region, and indefinite definite tools are required, all available at any Volkswagen dealership.

Instructions

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable and settle it aside. Make certain that it does not touch metal. Loosen the trappings handle cestuses tensioners to Proceeds the tension on the guide belts. Lift the coerce belts off the pulleys. In 1996 nailed down 1998, Volkswagen settle a 1.9L engine in the Passat. The engine is an interference engine, which income that the engine was built with brisk tolerances. Hence, whether the region stretches bygone the scope of the tensioner, the valves Testament most imaginable hit the pistons and create lingering engine damage. Volkswagen has not recommended a particular amplitude to convert the timing girth, on the contrary preceding applicability and assistance novel dictates that the band should be changed every 60,000 miles.

Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the timing marks on the flywheel column up. Encompass the setting bar into the rear of the camshaft, and centre it using the Tentacle gauge. Provided the setting bar cannot be inserted, turn the crankshaft one bounteous turn until the timing marks on the flywheel wrinkle up again. Directly comprehend the setting bar.

3. Comprehend the locking pin into the injection pump sprocket. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolts, crankshaft pulley and lower timing zone contain. Loosen the injection pump sprocket bolts. Loosen the tensioner pulley stone. Move the tensioner away from the belt. Tighten the nut to hold the tensioner out of the way. Lift the timing belt off the sprockets. Check that the timing marks on the flywheel are still lined up, and that the setting bar and the locking pin are located properly.

4. Loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt one-half turn. Release the sprocket from the camshaft taper by tapping lightly using a drift through the hole in the rear cover until the camshaft sprocket turns freely.

5. Install the timing belt starting on the crankshaft sprocket and working counterclockwise, routing the belt on the inside of the intermittent shaft pulley, then over the injection pump and camshaft sprockets. Keep the belt taut on the nontensioned side, then bring the belt down behind the tensioner pulley.

6. Loosen the tensioner pulley nut. Turn the tensioner pulley, using the tensioner wrench, until the notch and the raised mark are lined up. Tighten the tensioner pulley nut to 15 foot-pounds of torque. Check that the flywheel timing marks are still lined up. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt to 33 foot-pounds of torque.

7. Tighten the injection pump sprocket bolts to 18 foot-pounds of torque. Remove the locking pin from the injection pump sprocket. Remove the camshaft setting bar. Turn the crankshaft clockwise two turns until the timing marks on the flywheel line up again. Apply pressure to the belt, and check that the notch and the raised mark on the tensioner move out of alignment.

8. Release the pressure while watching the notch and the raised mark to ensure that it realigns. If not, repeat the tensioning procedure (Step 6). Reinstall remainder of the parts in reverse order of removal. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolts to 18 foot-pounds of torque.
