Pumps and Pressurizes Fuel
As its name implies, a fuel pump is responsible for pumping (pressurizing) fuel from a vehicle's gas tank and sending it to the engine. When the fuel pump lobe on a vehicle's rotating camshaft contacts the fuel pump push rod, the push rod is pushed up, which causes the fuel pump lever arm to drop down inside the fuel pump housing. A fuel pump is driven by the rotating action of an engine camshaft. An engine camshaft has a series of small, elongated bumps, or lobes, machined onto its surface. The majority of these "cam lobes" are responsible for operating various valve-train components within an engine. One cam lobe in particular, the fuel pump lobe, is responsible for operating the fuel pump.A fuel pump is an integral chip of a vehicle's fuel delivery development that bolts directly to the side of a vehicle's engine block. A fuel pump has a spread out, brief metal rod, otherwise familiar as a fuel pump push rod. It is designed to fit into a bantam opening machined into the side of a vehicle's engine. This opening allows the fuel pump push rod to be seated far within an engine's inner core, equitable up against the engine camshaft.
This causes an area of low pressure, or vacuum, that draws fuel from the gas tank into the fuel pump. When the camshaft lobe rotates away from the fuel pump push rod, the reverse happens: pressure is generated inside the fuel pump, which pressurizes the gas and speeds it towards the engine.
