There is no commitment to remove the instrument Swarm in the 1992 Ford Explorer.
10. Insert the new cable into the sheath from the inside of the car, pushing the cable toward the engine.11. Insert the end of the cable into the transmission connector, slide the lock nut over the threads, and tighten it in place.
1. Park the Explorer on a level surface. Turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake. Open the hood, and allow the engine to cool.
2. Remove the negative cable from the battery using a box wrench to loosen the lock nut on the terminal and pull it off the post.
3. Locate where the speedometer cable is attached to the transmission on the driver's side of the engine, just behind the bell housing of the transmission. Pull the rubber boot off the cable connector, and push it back up on the cable sheath.
4. Use a box wrench to turn the lock nut on the cable connector counter-clockwise until it is loose enough to pull out of the transmission by hand.
5. Open the driver's side door of the Explorer. Using a flashlight, look under the dash up toward the instrument cluster. Locate the back of the speedometer gauge and the cable sheath connected to the bottom of the gauge. The gauge is directly over the steering column, so look up and in at an angle to see it easily.
6. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the rear of the gauge using a box wrench to loosen the lock nut. Pull the sheath away from the gauge as far back toward the firewall as possible; the sheath will slide back into the engine compartment, but don't let it go all the way through.
7. Pull the cable out from the sheath from the end in the engine compartment.
8. Fill an eyedropper with oil.
9. Reach under the dash, and grab the cable sheath. Inject a few drops of oil into the sheath with the eyedropper. The oil will provide lubrication for the cable.
When a mechanical speedometer gauge begins to act erratically or does not register changes in speed, the problem is likely a worn or broken speedometer cable. 1992 Ford Explorers have mechanical, rather then electronic, speedometers. Generic speedometer cable kits can be bought at any store and cut to size, but using one made specifically to replace a speedometer cable on a 1992 Ford Explorer will make the job go faster. The speedometer cable runs through a metal sheath that protects it from wear; all that must be removed is the cable, not the sheath.
Instructions
Pull the rubber boot down over the connection.
12. Insert the end of the cable into the back of the speedometer gauge, and push the sheath up and over the connector. Tighten the lock nut back in place to hold in the cable.
13. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery. Close the hood. Start the car, and drive around for a few miles to allow the cable to seat and stretch into position.
